The shooting has served to strengthen the resolve of authorities to investigate both the killing of Suarez and the raid on the public broadcaster, TC Television, says Attorney General Diana Salazar Méndez.

Noboa declared Ecuador to be in an “internal armed conflict” and imposed a state of emergency amid the rise in crime and recent escape from prison of gang leader Jose Adolfo Macías Villamar.

It’s a situation that has journalists across Ecuador rethinking safety, with some now wearing bulletproof vests on assignment. Newsrooms are also reevaluating how to respond during an attack like the one on TC Television.
