[[Many animal shelters in Ukraine are in dire need of pet food and water; many others have been destroyed. Local volunteers are risking their lives to save the animals—and getting help from across the ocean. Khrystyna Shevchenko has the story, narrated by Anna Rice.]]

Until February 24th, 2022, an organization called Animal Rescue Kharkiv had been rescuing stray animals and had its own animal adoption center that accommodated 297 dogs and 80 cats. On March 7th, the building was shelled.

Employees had to quickly evacuate the animals—and they have been evacuating other four-legged victims of the war ever since. They've found injured animals in the Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv regions.

Ukraine. After the beginning of the war, they started a project to support animals in Ukraine and work with a number of small clinics like Animal Rescue Kharkiv.

“We realized we could help individuals and small animal shelters that are located in the south and east of Ukraine. Very often, these are just regular people who rescued animals, and suddenly they need to find room for the animals, to feed them, and later on — to evacuate them.”
((NARRATION))

Thanks to Nova Ukraine, Animal Rescue Kharkiv has evacuated more than 3,000 animals to Poland, Germany, Latvia,

Romania, Italy and France.
In addition to the evacuations, they have helped over 15,000 animals inside Ukraine,
treating sick animals,

neutering or spaying them, and providing the animals with adequate food and water supplies.
((Yulia Zimerman, Nova Ukraine Volunteer)) ((IN UKR))
“We work closely with Ukrainian producers of pet food. So, we have an opportunity to buy pet food from them in bulk—that way, we are helping the animals and also supporting Ukraine’s economy.”
((NARRATION))
One problem they are just beginning to tackle is raising funds to

rebuild the destroyed shelters in Ukraine.
As more and more animals are evacuated, European shelters are reaching capacity and increasingly in need of more room.
