About VOA

VOA is the U.S. government’s largest international multimedia news organization, providing content in more than 45 languages to audiences with limited or no access to a free press. Established in 1942, VOA is committed to providing comprehensive, independent, and accurate news coverage to its audiences. VOA is funded entirely by the American taxpayer and is part of the U.S. Agency for Global Media. VOA’s mission and editorial independence are protected by laws that protect its journalists from influence, pressure, or retaliation from government officials or politicians.

In 1976, President Gerald R. Ford signed the VOA Charter, which states:
1. VOA will be a consistently reliable and authoritative source of news. VOA news will be accurate, objective and comprehensive.
2. VOA will represent America, not just one segment of American society, and will present a balanced and comprehensive range of important American ideas and institutions.
3. VOA will present, clearly and effectively, the policies of the United States and responsible discussion and opinion about them.

In 1994, the U.S. Congress passed the United States International Broadcasting Act. The act also requires that the work of VOA journalists be authoritative, accurate, objective, comprehensive, balanced, and reflective of the cultural and social diversity of the United States. In 2016, Congress reaffirmed, through the National Defense Authorization Act, that VOA's newsgathering and reporting functions must continue to be independent and objective. Every day, VOA journalists work hard to implement the principles of a free press.
