((Naoma, From Washington)) “It's really, really crucial that world leaders act and are vocal about what's happening in Ukraine.” ((John, From Miami)) “Just to see what everyone's just going through just to survive, it's just – it's impactful. And, I mean, this is literally the least I could do. ((Desiree, From Virginia)) “Democracy is fragile and not just in Ukraine but across an entire world. And to me, this is a domino effect.” ((NARRATOR)) Americans have rallied in other cities, including Los Angeles… ((NARRATOR)) … and New York. ((NARRATOR)) At President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address earlier this week… ((NARRATOR)) … a standing ovation by Democrat and Republican lawmakers for the Ukrainian ambassador. ((NARRATOR)) As the Russian invasion unfolded, Americans' approval of Biden's response increased. ((Jerry, From Los Angeles)) “I believe he [Biden] is doing all he can. I wish he would do more. I understand the delicate balance and the desire to avoid getting there to an escalating conflict.” ((NARRATOR)) Forty-three percent of Americans say they approve of Biden’s response to Russia, up from 34% last week, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. ((Cliff Young, Ipsos)) ((Skype)) “Across the board, we see approximately seven to nine percent increase in support in specific policies related to Ukraine. And this is something very typical, we often see this during times of war and conflict. We call this a rally around the flag effect.” ((NARRATOR)) According to the same poll, 58% say it is worthwhile to pay more for gas as a result of sanctions against Russia imposed to defend another democratic country. ((NARRATOR)) But not all Americans agree, including some followers of Donald Trump. The former president has been using the crisis to attack Biden. ((Donald Trump, 45th U.S. President)) “The problem is not that Putin is smart, which of course he's smart, but the real problem is our leaders are dumb.” ((NARRATOR)) Overall, polls suggest Americans are in favor of humanitarian and military support but against sending U.S. troops to Ukraine.
