[[INTRO: A space policy expert says despite the unfolding Russian invasion in Ukraine, the International Space Station should remain at peace. Plus, a delivery of science experiments to the ISS, and a piece of Earth art bound for the Moon. VOA’s Arash Arabasadi brings us The Week in Space.]]

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is unlikely to hinder peaceful cooperation in space, according to George Washington University’s Space Policy Institute Director, Scott Pace.

“The space station, as I said, has been largely isolated from other political events. But, you know, it’s not invincible. It does exist in a larger context of US-Russian relations. Given our mutual dependence, however, and given the good working relationship we have at the technical level, I don’t see anything happening to the station in the near term despite events on Earth.”

The International Space Station is a partnership of five space agencies from 15 countries. The space station is almost as long as a football field with around 13-kilometers of electrical wiring. It’s been home to space-traveling humans for more than two decades.

And, following the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, it was Russia that transported astronauts to and from the ISS. There are currently four NASA astronauts, two Russian cosmonauts, and one European astronaut aboard the space station. Previous Western sanctions on Russia specifically exempted space cooperation, but it’s too soon to know if that will change.

In other news this week, the aerospace and defense company, Northrop Grumman, successfully launched its Cygnus resupply spacecraft from the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. It was the company’s 17th resupply mission to the ISS, and Cygnus carried more than 37-hundred kilograms ((3764)) of supplies.

The craft arrived Monday at the ISS, where the station’s robotic arm captured and reeled it into docking position. Cygnus delivered supplies and equipment in support of scientific missions, including a study on the effects of a new drug on breast and prostate cancer cells, as well as a new combustion facility and a lithium-ion battery able to work under extreme temperatures and in a vacuum.

Finally this week, a piece of Earth-art is set for space. British artist Sacha Jafri created the piece entitled, “We rise together – with the light of the moon,” and it should launch by year’s end. Spacebit, a company developing technology for space, says the space-grade aluminum gold plate should withstand extreme temperatures ranging from minus-173 degrees Celsius to 123-degrees Celsius. No details on the cost of the work, but a previous Jafri sold for 62-million dollars, good for the second-most expensive piece sold at auction by a living artist.
