[[The head of the yet-to-be built National Museum of the American Latino says construction could begin in Washington within the next five years. Jorge Zamanillo, who was recently named as the museum’s director, spoke with reporter Jose Pernalete – who filed this story for VOA. ]]
((NARRATION))
The National Museum of the American Latino will be the place where the artistic, historical and cultural contributions of Hispanics in the United States will be told.
In 2020, Congress passed legislation authorizing the Smithsonian Institution to build the museum. A building site has yet to be chosen but construction could begin sometime in the next five years, says recently appointed museum director, Jorge Zamanillo.

“Selecting the site is the most important thing. How the building is going to look, choosing the architects, engineers and the designers who will help you decide how big the building is going to be and how much can we put there and what are we going to exhibit.”
((NARRATION))
Zamanillo currently heads the HistoryMiami Museum. An archaeologist and the son of Cuban immigrants, he says work on what the museum will exhibit will start in May.

“We have to do a lot of research on the many communities in the United States, the Latino community, to find out what the stories are, what we want to tell in this museum. Even if it is Venezuelan, Cuban, Argentine, Mexican, Puerto Rican, we are all Latinos, and we are all different.”
((NARRATION))
It is estimated building the museum will cost between 600 and 700 million dollars. Half of this money will come from federal funds; the rest will be from private contributions and donors.
Some of the artifacts at the HistoryMiami Museum may end up at the new museum in Washington.

“It is possible that an object that we have here, an artifact, a photo, will be used in the national museum. That is very important, Cuban rafts that have arrived here, we have many pieces that can contribute.”
((NARRATION))
Zamanillo estimates the National Museum of the American Latino will open its doors in ten years.
