NSO was already under fire internationally over claims that authoritarian governments used Pegasus to spy on opponents, including diplomats and journalists. The United States recently imposed sanctions on the company after finding the spyware on the phones of State Department officials in Africa. Now reports that NSO technology was being used in its home turf, Israel, are rocking the country. Linda Gradstein and Ricki Rosen report from Jerusalem.]] ((NARRATOR)) Israeli police used NSO Group's Pegasus spyware to spy on Israeli citizens through their mobile phones, according to reports by Israel’s Calcalist newspaper. The alleged targets included several city mayors and protestors against former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. ((Dana Yaffe, Hebrew University International Human Rights Clinic (( Female (in English), VOA )) ((Mandatory cg: Zoom)) “The claims are that NSO was used without any suspicion. So it was used on innocent citizens just to try to keep up if they might have committed any kinds of crime. So, this is very severe. NSO is a dramatic violation of the right of privacy.” ((Mandatory cg: Israel Police Spokesman)) ((NARRATOR)) Israel’s Internal Security Minister Omer Barlev denied that the police had tapped into protestors’ phones, and he ordered a police investigation. ((Voice of Omer Barlev, Israeli Internal Security Minister, Male (in Hebrew, NEEDS VOICEOVER))) ((Mandatory cg: Kan Israel TV)) “There was no use, I repeat, no use of the NSO program or any other program to follow or listen or tap any phone of any protestor.” ((Mandatory cg: Knesset TV Channel)) ((NARRATOR)) Israeli analysts say the police should not be allowed to investigate themselves, and there must be legislative oversight to prevent this surveillance of citizens from happening again. ((Tehilla Shwartz Altshuler, The Israel Democracy Institute (Female (in English), VOA)) ((Mandatory cg: Zoom)) “Intelligence technologies that open up very, very wide surveillance abilities are not supposed to be used by law enforcement against civilians. That’s the one. The second thing is, there is a huge need for an updated legislation that deals with digital surveillance in Israel and also an updated privacy law in Israel.” ((Mandatory cg: Kan Israel TV)) ((NARRATOR)) NSO originally said its technology could not be used in Israel or the West Bank. But Palestinian human rights organizations in the West Bank say the software was used to spy on them because Israel claimed they were terrorist groups. ((Tahseen Alyyan, Al-Haq Foundation (Male (in Arabic, NEEDS VOICEOVER), AFP "As institutions that have been targeted, we express our fears and concern about the existence of a link between the discovery of the process of espionage on institutions and the recent designation of six Palestinian institutions by the (Israeli) occupation authorities as terrorist organizations." ((Mandatory cg: Kan Israel TV)) ((NARRATOR)) NSO was already reeling from widespread criticism internationally. Sanctions against the company have already been imposed by the U.S. and are being considered by the European Union. ((Tehilla Shwartz Altshuler, The Israel Democracy Institute)) ((Mandatory cg: Zoom)) “Israelis have, I think, started to understand that if a certain technology is being developed in Israel, sold to dictatorships in Africa or other countries, also used in the territories — eventually it is going to be used against Israeli citizens.” ((NARRATOR)) While most Israelis did not protest the use of NSO’s spyware technology abroad, they are furious that an Israeli-made intelligence tool is being used against its own citizens.
