On social media platforms, Ukrainians have been trading tips on how to prepare for war. On the streets of the capital, Kyiv, life continues as normal and many people are reluctant to speak openly about the tensions. In this report narrated by Jon Spier, for VOA, Ricardo Marquina is in Kyiv has their story.]] ((NARRATOR)) It is a calm morning in the Ukrainian capital. There is no sign that suggests this is the center of a country under increasing pressure from Russia and that Moscow is massing troops on its border. Residents are going about their day as usual, but it is clear this is not a typical day. ((RADIO VERSION: Valentina, a resident of the capital, tells VOA she is confident things will be OK, but cannot mask the fact she is nervous.)) ((Valentina, Kyiv Resident - WOMAN IN UKRAINIAN )) “Undoubtedly all this affects us a lot, but I have great confidence in the justice of the Ukrainian cause; of its strength, of its future, and I love my country so much that I trust that everything will be fine.” ((NARRATOR)) Many of those interviewed think the possibility of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine is unlikely. ((RADIO VERSION: This resident, who identified himself only as Vladimir, believes Russia will not act.)) ((Vladimir, Kyiv Resident – MALE IN RUSSIAN - ORIGINAL VOA)) “There will be no war, because between wanting to do it and being able to do it, there is a big difference. They do not have the enormous economic capacity that is needed.” ((RADIO VERSION: That is a sentiment shared by another resident, Igor, who thinks Moscow is bluffing.)) ((Igor, Kyiv Resident, MALE, IN RUSSIAN - ORIGINAL VOA)) “Russia does all this to force you to negotiate with them.” ((NARRATOR)) But optimism on these streets is quickly overshadowed by concerns about a repeat of war in the country’s east. ((RADIO VERSION: Yulia, who lives in Kyiv, tries to be optimistic despite what she hears is going on farther east.)) ((Yulia, Kyiv Resident ( WOMAN IN RUSSIAN ORIGINAL VOA)) “I believe in a future without war, as a positive person, but the situation is complicated. I try not to think about it a lot, or watch the news, but anyway inside I am clearly worried.” ((RADIO VERSION: For Irina, also a resident of the capital, the threat is immediate.)) ((Irina, Kyiv Resident (WOMAN IN RUSSIAN ORIGINAL VOA) “I am worried about my parents who live there, in the Luhansk region (near Donbas).” ((NARRATOR)) Developments in Kyiv - despite its efforts to carry on as usual - are being watched around the world, a situation which residents want to escape as soon as possible.
