Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan quickly congratulated Donald Trump for his election victory Wednesday, with a message on X referring to him as a “friend.”
Analysts say Erdogan will be looking to reestablish the close ties he had with Trump and move beyond the frosty relationship he had with President Joe Biden, who largely kept relations at a foreign minister level.

“During the Trump administration, what we see is a very strong, leader-to-leader relationship. If I remember correctly, President Trump and President Erdogan, met nine times, face to face. There was, of course, also a state visit, and a reception, at the White House, as opposed to the Biden presidency where the two leaders met face to face only twice.”

Erdogan is critical of Biden's military support of Israel and of not doing more to end
Israel's war on Hamas and Hezbollah.
Trump made campaign promises to support Israel, but Erdogan, in his congratulatory message, expressed hope that Trump would end the conflict.

That hope is reflected in central Istanbul’s Kadiköy district, where some say they
hope a Trump presidency will bring peace and benefit Turkey.

“I hope Trump's win will be a good occasion for the whole world. I wish him success. I hope that he will stop this bloodshed and keep Israel in its place for peace and brotherhood. Whether it is Muslim[s] or Jew[s], everyone should stay in their own territory, in their own land.”

There are some who worry what a second Trump presidency will bring for the wider world.

There are major policy differences between Trump and Erdogan: a big point of friction is the Turkish leader’s support for Hamas.
But analysts say Erdogan sees the new Trump presidency as a new opportunity for face-to-face talks where that and other differences can be resolved.
