Woman weeps over body of relative who has been shot in Hlaing Thar Yar STORYLINE: The killing by security forces of at least 65 protesters by security forces in an area of Myanmar's biggest city on March 14 this year was planned and premeditated and its perpetrators must be brought to justice, a rights watchdog said in a report released on Thursday. The deaths occurred in the Hlaing Thar Yar neighbourhood of Yangon when soldiers opened fire on a large group of people demonstrating against the military's takeover of the country. Using witness testimony and analysis of imagery taken at the time, New York-based Human Rights Watch say it has established the killings were not the result of riot control gone wrong. Instead it says they were deliberate, with the protesters first being trapped, or "kettled," and then shot, even though they were offering no threat to the security forces. "This without doubt constitutes the crime against humanity of murder," Human Rights Watch's Myanmar researcher Manny Maung told the Associated Press. She termed the incident a "massacre". "We can prove, through testimonies and digital forensics, that in videos posted by security forces, and images that show security forces pointing their weapons – assault rifles and automatic weapons - against civilians, that this was planned and coordinated," she said. The report says around 200 soldiers were involved. All but one of the six witnesses that Human Rights Watch spoke to said they opened fire without warning. The report also said that police and troops shot at people trying to reach those wounded. "We really need to be making sure that those people making those orders are sanctioned and that they are outed and that they can be tried and held to account at a later time," Maung said. Protesters took to Myanmar's streets for several months in the wake of the overthrow of the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Security forces increasingly responded with lethal force. The death toll at Hlaing Thar Yar was one of the worst in a single day, throughout that period. The military authorities said they were acting to stop rioters burning down factories in the area. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
