Wide of houses STORYLINE: The family of an Iraqi migrant have been waiting anxiously for news of the 19-year-old, following a report that he may have perished along with others when their flimsy boat sank in the English Channel last week. Relatives and neighbors on Wednesday streamed into the home of Mohammed Hussein's parents in northern Iraq to offer support, as they waited for information of their son lost somewhere at sea between France and the U.K. According to his family, Mohammed traveled to Turkey through Iran. He was imprisoned for 20 days for illegally crossing the border, before arriving in Istanbul. He paid some smugglers in Istanbul to board their boat for Italy. After arriving in Italy, he took a train to Paris and then to Dunkirk in France. He was among 33 passengers on the boat that sank in the English Channel on November 24. His body has not been found yet. Mohammed called home on the night of the tragedy just before boarding the boat and heading to Britain, his mother, Khadija Osman said. "I will not forgive these countries, because he drowned in the British water," Osman said. Twenty-seven people died when the overcrowded inflatable boat sank in the waters between Britain and France, the deadliest migration accident ever recorded on the treacherous crossing. A survivor says the migrants made emergency calls to both British and French authorities, but both sides told them to call the other because the boat was in the other country’s territorial waters. "If refugees have got any rights in this world, then I urge... I can't continue..." said Mohammed's father Hussein Mohammed, who broke down sobbing. Hussein Mohammed is an Iranian Kurdish refugee who came to Iraq in 1988 and married Khadija who is Iraqi Kurdish. He never got Iraqi nationality. Hussein had a cow and made a living off it, but the cow died last summer and left him jobless. Mohammed and his sister finished high school, but they couldn't enroll in university as they did not have legal documents and national identities. Mohammed used to work as a daily-wage worker at construction sites and in factories. Many victims of the English Channel tragedy last week are believed to be Iraqi Kurds attempting to reach Britain with hopes of starting a new life. Migration rates are on the rise, according to Baker Ali, the head of the Association for Returning Refugees from Europe, an N.G.O. By their count, by the end of 2021, 28,000 Iraqis had left for Europe. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
