Tanzanian authorities say the death toll from the landslide caused by heavy rainfall on December 3 in the town of Katesh, about 478 miles from the capital, Dar es Salaam rose to 85 over the weekend. Government spokesperson Mobhare (Moh-bah-Rey) Matinyi (Mah-tee-Nyee) says 139 were wounded. The Tanzania Citizen newspaper reports that the US Embassy in Tanzania provided $100,000 in humanitarian assistance through USAID. Spokesperson Matinyi (Mah-tee-Nyee) tells VOA’s James Butty, the government is working to restore services in the affected areas.
