Russians React to Top Court’s Ban on 'International LGBTQ Movement'
December 1, 2023
A small group of people gathered outside the Russian Supreme Court in Moscow Thursday as it rules to ban the "international LGBTQ movement," labeling it "extremist."
Media reports say the alleged movement lacks a legal entity status as it has no organizational structure, membership, leaders, website or even an address.
The ruling is the latest move made by the Kremlin as it pushes ultra-conservative social values, a phenomenon that has accelerated since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.
"I had hoped that many more people would come" says Ada Blakewell, an activist and now former head of a LGBTQ shelter. "The fact that very few people came shows how scared everyone is."
