Toui: Sabaidee Caty!
Caty: Sabaidee Toui!
Caty: Don’t you think it’s very cold today?
Toui: No, the temperature is so nice.
Caty: Really? I hope I’m not getting sick.
Toui: Did you take a flu shot yet?
Caty: Not yet. I’m scheduled to have it next week.
Toui: That’s good. I got mine yesterday. My arm STILL hurts.
Caty: Well, the flu itself would hurt more!
Toui: I know! So I brought a video about vaccinations to show you!
Play video.
((Dr. Jennifer Lou Lorico-De Guzman, Taguig Health Department -- (in English)))
“There are myths that these particular vaccines give you the disease itself. So, there’s a lot of controversies.”
So now, health advocates such as Ma. [Pronounced Maria] Nieves Bulalacao are hitting the streets to talk to parents.
((Ma. Nieves Bulalacao, Taguig Health Department -- (female in Taglog)))
“We go to the house and knock on their doors. We need to inform them of the importance of vaccination.”
The father says they’ve resisted for several reasons, including rumors they’d heard.
((Joeson Dalanon, Father -- male in Tagalog))
“I hear there are lots of kids who die, so I didn’t want them vaccinated.”
((Natural sound pop from scene))
((NARRATION))
But these parents eventually agree to let their children get inoculated.
Toui: I’m glad people are learning more about vaccinations. But, what does controversy mean, Caty?
Caty: Controversy is a lot of disagreement and disputing over something usually that affects many people.
Toui: What about advocate?
Caty: It means publicly recommend or support. It is a noun as well.
Toui: And the last word is resist?
Caty: Resist means refuse to accept or oppose something or someone.
Toui: Thanks, now it time for pronunciations.
Toui: That’s all for today. Thanks, Caty!
Caty: You’re welcome!
