TEXT:
DEBRIS AND MUDSLIDES// COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES LEFT FLOODED BY TROPICAL STORM HILARY THAT SWEPT THROUGH CALIFORNIA ON SUNDAY//
MUDSLIDES WERE REPORTED AND ROADWAYS BUCKLED FROM THE FLOODING IN SOME COMMUNITIES//
IN CATHEDRAL CITY/ RESIDENTS FOUND THEIR HOMES SUDDENLY FLOODED// THIS MAN’S FAMILY FLED TO THE ROOF FOR SAFETY//
CATHEDRAL CITY RESIDENT, RONALD MENDIOLA, WADING THROUGH MUD (English)
"So, eventually we went to the patio, second story patio balcony, and from there on, we decided to go on top of the roof was our best bet for shelter. Five of us with a two and a half year old baby. And we did make it to safety by a Good Samaritan passing by and picking us up. All five of us from the roof."
IN THIS HILLSIDE COMMUNITY IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY/ A HEAVY MUDSLIDE TRAPPED RESIDENTS AND VEHICLES/ WHO OPTED TO HUNKER DOWN/ WHILE THE STORM MOVED PAST THE YUCAIPA MOUNTAINSIDE//
TOM FITZSIMMONS, SAN BERNARDINO RESIDENT (English)
“Yeah, we're just trying to clear the driveway so we can get out eventually or bring a tractor in to clean up all the mud. We cleared all the rocks out, and this is just the finishing part of that. And we still can't go over that bridge because that's like quicksand there. It's about 6 to 8 inches deep, and you sink right down to your boots.”
TROPICAL STORMS AND HURRICANES ANNUALLY STRIKE THE SOUTHERN AND EASTERN SHORELINES OF THE U-S// BUT HILARY IS THE FIRST TROPICAL STORM TO HIT THE WESTERN COASTLINE SINCE 1997/ AND THE FIRST TO HIT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SINCE 1939//
RICHARD THOMPSON, NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGIST (English)
“This is historic. This is the first landfallen tropical storm in Southern California since September 25th, 1939. So it's been a few decades since this actually last occurred. So it's definitely a very rare occurrence.”
THE STORM FORCED THE CANCELLATION OF FLIGHTS IN LOS ANGELES/ SAN DIEGO/ PHOENIX/ AND LAS VEGAS/ WHILE SCHOOLS IN LOS ANGELES AND SAN DIEGO WERE CLOSED MONDAY//
AN INDONESIAN FAMILY DROVE FOR TWO HOURS ON SATURDAY/ FROM LA TO SAN DIEGO TO JOIN A RUNNING EVENT// BUT IT WAS CANCELLED JUST WHEN THEY ARRIVED//
DEWI RUSMIATI, INDONESIAN IN LA (Bahasa Indonesia)
Translated: We checked in the hotel around 6 in the evening. At 7, we were told by the organizer that the race has been cancelled. I was so shocked. I was a bit disappointed with the organizer. Why did not they decide the cancellation as early as they can? News outlets already say that this was a very dangerous hurricane.
TROPICAL STORM HILARY MADE LANDFALL SUNDAY/ ON MEXICO’S BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA//
CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR GAVIN NEWSOM/ DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY/ TO HELP WITH RESPONSE AND RECOVERY EFFORTS//
