((INTRO)) [[As Ukrainian forces continue their counteroffensive in the south, Russian forces are pummeling the city of Kupiansk in the northeast. VOA’s Heather Murdock reports with videographer Yan Boechat from a city under attack as families evacuate and soldiers prepare for battle.]]
((Heather Murdock, VOA News))
“We are here in a military defense point, hidden in the city of Kupiansk.”
((NARRATOR))
This city in eastern Ukraine is becoming more dangerous by the day, with Russian forces attacking from a distance of about five kilometers.
It is widely believed that Russia wants to recapture Kupiansk, and volunteers are evacuating families from front-line areas and nearby villages.
Russia occupied this city for seven months before Ukraine took control last September.
(30 seconds in. A clip sound from the edit. I guess there’s nothing we can do to smooth out the jump cut?)
Locals evacuating the area say they survived occupation, often without electricity, heat or the internet, but now they cannot take any more.

“We are leaving and we don’t know if we will come home, or what will happen to our house.”
((FOR RADIO: In an evacuation bus about to head out of town, Lydia weeps as she tells us that she knows she may never go home again.))
((NARRATOR))
But at a church in the center of town, some residents say they will stay put until their homes fall down around them.
About two hours after we visit the church, bombs crash into a residential area about 100 meters away. Ten people are taken to a hospital.
Soldiers say this city is strategic because of its railway hub, and they are preparing for a tough battle ahead.
((Heather Murdock, VOA News))
“We’re told in the coming weeks that these evacuations, now going on daily, could become mandatory.”
