[[When faced with the task of painting a giant mural at Seattle’s Museum of Flight, artist Esmeralda Vasquez found it was best not to do it alone. More than 160 volunteers helped out, as reported in this story by VOA’s Natasha Mozgovaya.
((NARRATION))
Painting a wall 38 meters long and 6 meters high on a hot summer day is a daunting task. So artist Esmeralda Vasquez got some help, including from eight-year-old Shabham Sharma.

"The pictures are really good right now. I like it!"
((NARRATION))
Over 160 people of all ages volunteered for the communal mural painting project at Seattle’s Museum of Flight.

"You know, personally, I'm so grateful for opportunities like post-COVID, you know, to be able to get together with people and do something great that uplifts the community. I guess, it becomes part of history, right? I can look back and say, 'Yeah, I contributed!'"

"My kiddo [child] loves the Museum of Flight. So, when I saw murals plus that — we just had to come."
((NARRATION))
Vasquez was surprised that so many people joined the mural project, and she welcomed their various skill levels.

"We did it in a color-by-numbers process, which is what we've done with community paint days before. Just so it's not as intimidating. // It feels good to see so many people enjoying it and coming out."
((NARRATION))
Promotions Manager Ted Huetter says the project is part of the museum's Art and Flight program.

"We wanted to engage the local community in ways that we never have before. I have met people in aviation and space for most of my life. // And if there's one thing that I could say that is a common denominator is that it began at an early age or at some point in their life, they were inspired by something natural, you know, things that fly. // And this mural is all about that."
[[FOR RADIO: The artist agrees.]]
((Esmeralda Vasquez, Artist))
"It reminded me of my childhood and just the playfulness of that and the freedom that comes with childhood and just all the opportunities that you have. And so I focused on very playful designs like the paper airplane and like the bird, a dragonfly, a butterfly."
((NARRATION))
Vasquez says the mural belongs to the community in every sense.
