- Residents from Dharavi in Mumbai protest and demand that the slum sprawl redevelopment project be taken away from Indian tycoon Gautam Adani and be handled by the local Maharashtra government. Protesting residents were joined by activists and political parties, who allege a lack of clarity along with corruption in the tendering process to favour Adani. Mumbai's housing, transport, water, and waste management infrastructure has not kept pace with its growth as a megacity, with around 40 percent of people living in slums. Dharavi, of "Slumdog Millionaire" fame, is home to a million people and considered one of the world's largest slums. In July, the Maharashtra government formally awarded the 259-hectare Dharavi redevelopment project, with the revamp reported to have a price tag of $3 billion, to an Adani Group firm. SOUNDBITE 1 - Sandeep Katke, advocate and local Dharavi leader (male, 42 years old, English, 26 sec): "In recent years we have seen that and we have experienced that Adani - who was worth fifty thousand crores in 2014 - after only about eight to ten years now his net worth is more than ten lakh crores. So, there is so much favouritism for Adani. He has been given seaports, he has been given airports, coal blocks have been given to Adani. There are so many perks given to Adani." 21. SOUNDBITE 2 - Sandeep Katke, advocate and local Dharavi leader (male, 42 years old, English, 22 sec): "This project (Dharavi redevelopment) was allotted to Seclink (a Dubai based company), and now it is given to Adani by the Fadnavis government. So, obviously there is corruption, and we are doubting that this project will only benefit Adani. This project has been made to give benefit to only Adani and not to the people of Dharavi." 22. SOUNDBITE 3 - Shahir Surendra Barwe, protest poet (male, 63 years old, Marathi, 40 sec): "Yes, the reason I have written the protest poetry against Adani is because the entire country knows the corrupt history of Adani. Despite that, this government is favouring Adani and they have handed over this contract to him. That is why the residents of Dharavi are agitated that a contract of this large scale has been awarded to Adani. What is the reason it is given to him? And even if the project was given, was it given by taking the Dharavi residents into confidence? No, the residents were not (taken into confidence)." 23. SOUNDBITE 4 - Prakash Laxman Kharat, local resident of Dharavi who stays with his three brothers in the same house (male, 64 years old, Marathi, 17 sec): "No, we are not protesting redevelopment. Why would we protest redevelopment? But at least they (government) should come forward and talk to us. They should tell us what they are planning and tell us that they will give us such and such a facility. They should tell us that since we have been living together for ages, they will give us four houses (since they are four brothers in his family). Or that they will give each brother a house. But they don’t tell us anything. What they are up to we residents have no idea."
