Niger Counterterrorism Support Program Among Aid Halted
August 8, 2023
Funding for international military education and training, peacekeeping operations and foreign military financing programs supporting Niger's counterterrorism capabilities are among the assistance the United States paused after a military takeover in the country, the State Department said on Tuesday.
“Approximately a million dollars in international military education and training funding, which sends Nigerien military students to the U.S. for training or peacekeeping operations, funded programs that support infrastructure training, advisory support and equipment for counterterrorism and or peacekeeping purposes,” said Matthew Miller, U.S. State Department spokesperson.
Miller told reporters that Washington is still hopeful and trying to achieve a return to constitutional order in Niger after the military takeover late last month.
