Sierra Leone’s President Bio Opens Parliament, Opposition Boycotts
August 4, 2023
Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio officially opened parliament Thursday with a call for unity and dialogue. But, as in the two previous sittings since the June 24 general elections, the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) boycotted the sitting. The APC has refused to participate at any level of governance because it says the government tampered with the results to ensure it gained a majority. Chernor Bah, Sierra Leone’s new minister of information, tells VOA’s James Butty , President Bio acknowledged what he calls “logistical limitations” during the elections and called for the establishment of a committee to review the polls.
