6. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) PRESIDENT OF SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISE VELO CUBA, NAYVIS DIAZ LABAUT, SAYING:
"The idea is to make bamboo bicycles; bamboo is what we have in Cuba. There are 28 species in Cuba and fortunately, here we have the two or three species needed to make a bicycle, adult bicycles. In the previous edition we produced children's bicycles, which is an area we are working on a lot. So in this special edition we are working with ANSOC (Cuba's Deaf and Hearing Impaired National Association) with people in the community who have hearing impairments. Yet for us it is no problem, on the contrary, it is truly a success they can build bamboo bicycles with our team."

8. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) LAWYER, DORA CRUZ, SAYING:
"The bamboo bicycle is a way to have a sustainable and eco-friendly means of transport, which is something being advocated for globally. So, bamboo is a plant that is very easy to grow, very noble. For every bamboo cane that is cut for this process, ten are planted, which means that we are not having a negative impact on the growing process of the plant and everything is used".

"It is very important for us deaf people to learn a skill and we are very happy. We have learned a lot of things we didn't know and it helps us to have a job in the future. Another thing I see in the course is the relationship forming with the non-deaf people, even though many of them don't know sign language, it's been really nice. The teachers have even made an effort to learn our language and communicate with us and for us it is exciting. It's a pity the course is coming to an end because we like it so much, I would like it to go on much longer".

STORY: Among the classic cars, mopeds and rickshaws Cubans use to get around capital city Havana, a new kind of ride is hitting the streets - bamboo bicycles made by a local workshop.
Vero Cuba, a bike shop and tour company, produces the lightweight, ecofriendly options as part of a program funded by the Netherlands' embassy in the country.
The workshop has partnered with groups from stay-at-home mothers to the deaf community to teach residents how to make the bikes and repair them. Some of those who take Vero's course may become employed by the bike shop in the future, or may open their own small businesses.
Both transportation and steady employment are chronic issues in Cuba, where the economy was hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
Cuba largely blames Cold War-era sanctions from the United States as holding back its economic growth, and the embargo means a lack of imported cars have caused residents to rely on decades-old models or mopeds from China, which began to arrive in the '90s.
