Uneasy Calm in Niger As France Evacuates Nationals
August 1, 2023
Defense chiefs from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) meet for two days beginning Wednesday in Nigeria’s capital to discuss the coup in Niger, according to Reuters. ECOWAS has rejected the coup and vowed to use all means necessary to return ousted President Mohamed Bazoum to power. Meanwhile, some European nations, including France, Italy and Spain say they will evacuate their nationals. VOA’s French to Africa reporter Abdou Razak in Niamey tells VOA’s James Butty, the capital was calm on Tuesday.
