Guinea: Opposition Parties Set for New Pro-Democracy Protests
May 17, 2023
In Guinea, the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) and opposition political parties have called for new nationwide protest Wednesday. This, after the military junta, led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, late last week released three members of the FDC who had been jailed for violating the government’s ban on protests. The government dissolved the FNDC last year, accusing it of organizing armed demonstrations and acting like a private militia. Journalist Karim Kamara, in the Guinean capital Conakry, tells Daybreak Africa host James Butty, Tuesday’s protesters is to show FNDC displeasure over the lack of progress in the transition to democratic rule.
