((INTRO: ))
[[Two competing events have put on display a cleaving of American conservatives ahead of next year’s presidential election. While Donald Trump and the former president’s only announced primary challenger, his former ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, took to the stage of the high-profile Conservative Political Action Conference near Washington, others attended a closed-door retreat in Florida hosted by the Club for Growth. Details from VOA’s chief national correspondent, Steve Herman, in Washington.]]

Former President Donald Trump returned to familiar and very friendly turf on Saturday night in the ballroom of CPAC’s annual gathering, whose attendees gave him 62 percent support in a straw poll for next year’s Republican Party primary.

“In 2016 I declared: I am your voice. Today, I add: I am your warrior. I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution. I am your retribution.” ((fade cheering/applause)) ((:18))

The only significant, declared challenger to Trump also speaking at CPAC was his former ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley.

An undeclared Republican primary prospect also addressing CPAC was Mike Pompeo, one of Trump’s secretaries of state. He took what was seen as a subtle dig at his former boss.

“We need a party, a conservative party, that we can be proud to call home again, rooted in our founding ideas, led by people of real character, of competence and commitment to the mission that brought you all here today.” ((:10))

Haley also spoke at the rival Florida event, hosted by the conservative, taxes- and economy-focused group Club for Growth. That event took place behind closed doors.

((NARRATOR))
The most anticipated speech at the Club for Growth gathering, to which Trump was not invited, came from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. He is seen as the biggest potential threat to Trump’s quest to again win his party’s nomination for president.

In Saturday’s CPAC straw poll, DeSantis captured 20 percent of the vote, indicating he has an uphill battle to dethrone Trump, especially among the former president’s most loyal supporters.
