[[This year’s Annual New York Fashion Week is wrapping up after featuring genderless style, throwback 1990s fashion and colorful knitwear to fight sadness. Nina Vishneva has the story, narrated by Anna Rice.]]

Some of the buzzwords of this decade, like non-binary and androgynous, were represented in this year’s New York fashion week.

“When you think about clothing, it doesn’t necessarily need to have a gender attached to it. Even though I’m at menswear day, I feel very comfortable wearing a skirt or a dress.”
((NARRATOR))
Designers are also looking backwards, taking inspiration from the 1990’s. Fashion designer Nicholas Raefski feels nostalgic about his youth and the styles that were popular then.

“I think it’s about taking the risk and finding something new, right? It’s easy to make certain garments, and not so much to make others… But the risk – you get more reward with!”
((NARRATOR))
Bulan is a young fashion designer from Thailand who became the New York Fashion Week’s new gem. Bulan works with knit fabrics, and it took him about two years to finish his latest collection. He dedicated his work to people with psychological problems and depression.

“I use the colors to mask the sadness – because if you walk outside right now, I guarantee you, there are people going through it, but you don’t know what they are going through – and that’s where the colors come in.”
((NARRATOR))
The new collection of the brand Jahnkoy was created by a fashion designer from Siberia, Russia – Maria Kazakova Tamboura. She has lived in New York for years and has worked closely with Puma and Swarovski on a series of collaborations.

“Our brand’s main goal is to revive various world’s crafts and cultural values. We want to see people wear beautiful fabrics that our ancestors spent so much time making, we want young people to remember the value of such things.”
((NARRATOR))
There’s also an environmental aesthetic here, with an emphasis on recycling, upcycling and using the materials left from older collections. There’s also a focus on traditional crafts and unique national styles.
Over 70 fashion companies took part in the New York Fashion Week this year.
