First devastated by last Monday's massive earthquake and then subsequently deluged by the collapse of local levees. Dorian Jones reports from Istanbul.]] ((NARRATOR)) Double tragedy...first the quake and then the deluge as levees failed, flooding the village of Tulul in northwest Syria’s Idlib province. [[RADIO VERSION: as local resident Samira Al-Ali explains]] ((Samira Al-Ali: Tulul Resident -VOA ORIGINAL((female in Arabic )) “What happened can't be described by the roar of water we used to hear. It was like tanks were coming to kill us. We can't really describe the scene that happened other than a disaster. “ ((NARRATOR)) The Tulul village, like the rest of the region, was already reeling from the devastating earthquake. But with continuous aftershocks, levees protecting the village from the waters of Orontes finally gave way. [[RADIO VERSION: Ayman Abdo Mohamed is the Council head of Al-Tulul village,]] ((Ayman Abdo Mohamed- Council Head of Al-Tulul Village)) ((male in Arabic)) “The earthquake greatly affected the levees, which caused cracks in the land, including in the levee between the nearby dam and our village. Eventually, the levees failed, causing a surge of water through the village. There are more than 40 houses that were completely destroyed.” ((NARRATOR)) Tulul village was host to many refugees who had fled the nation’s civil war. But despite their desperate efforts, they couldn't save the village, with 700 families made homeless by the flood. [[RADIO VERSION: Mustafa Juma Qasimo fled to Al Tulul to escape the civil war.]] ((Mustafa Juma Qasimo - Civil War Refugee- VOA ORIGINAL-((male in Arabic)) “The truth is that the village is completely flooded with water, and people are displaced from all their homes. We, as the residents of the village, tried as much as we could to close the levees so that this disaster would not happen, but it did not work out, and what happened, and unfortunately, the flood happened.” ((NARRATOR)) Now the village's inhabitants are cold and wet, and, like the whole region, are waiting for help amid sub-zero winter temperatures, with the fear that dams in the area could fail, triggering yet more floods. [[RADIO VERSION: Ayman Abdo Mohamed the Council head of Al-Tulul village,]] ((Ayman Abdo Mohamed- Council head of Al-Tulul village)) ((male in Arabic)) “We are currently asking everyone, whether organizations or countries, to help secure the situation and to shelter people fleeing the earthquake and floods as soon as possible and to meet the needs of the people. Because most of the residents who fled the village left without carrying anything.” ((NARRATOR)) While international aid is slowly arriving in Syria for isolated places like Tulul village inundated by water, residents could be waiting as it takes time for assistance to arrive.
