But many people across the country are mobilizing with opposition mayors to help. It’s happening even in places that were not hit, like Istanbul, where Dorian Jones reports.]] ((NARRATOR)) All through night, people in Turkey’s main city bring supplies for earthquake survivors. Two wedding halls are now distribution centers for aid donated from across the city. [[RADIO VERSION: Elif Polat, a salon manager, is now in charge of sending aid to quake survivors.]] ((Elif Polat, Wedding Hall Manager - female in Turkish)) “We opened the wedding halls the first morning. There is incredible help coming from everywhere. The aid is mostly food, blankets, and duvets, as well as hygiene goods, diapers, and an incredible amount of goods, all in first quality.” ((NARRATOR)) Hundreds of volunteers work through the night; for some the motivation is personal. [[RADIO VERSION: One of those volunteers is Ali Can Kocak.]] ((Ali Can Kocak-Volunteer VOA ORIGINAL ((male in English)) “Because my parents live in Adana, and my friends in Antakya, where the earthquakes hit the ground. And I can’t go to those places. I want to help people, and the nearest (donation) place to my house is here, Kadikoy place. And I will come here, and my friends will come here.” ((NARRATOR)) The relief effort is being coordinated by Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu from the opposition CHP party. ((COURTESY: Istanbul Greater Municipality)) He has provided trucks and the use of city buildings for relief efforts. Imamoglu visited the disaster region, where he sent search and rescue teams from Istanbul. ((COURTESY: Ankara Greater Municipality)) Ankara’s mayor – also a member of the opposition - sent workers to rebuild one of the airports in the quake-stricken region. ((End courtesy)) ((NARRATOR)) Such efforts come as the government faces growing criticism from survivors that its response is too slow, a charge officials deny. ((NARRATOR)) There was similar criticism in 1999 over the Izmit quake just outside Istanbul, which claimed more than 18,000 lives. ((NARRATOR)) ...Memories of that disaster are still fresh in the minds of some survivors and motivation to help in this latest crisis. [[RADIO VERSION: Yilmaz, who only wanted to by his first name, remembers. ]] ((Yilmaz, Resident [only wanted to be identified by his first name] VOA ORIGINAL male in Turkish)) “I experienced the 1999 Izmit earthquake. We lived through that disaster. It was extremely hard for us. Now I saw this earthquake and I relived those moments. That’s why I couldn’t sit at home or drink tea and wanted to rush here and offer help.” ((NARRATOR)) Diapers, antiseptic cologne, and other sanitary products are priority items as Istanbul comes together to help. [[RADIO VERSION: ...says wedding hall manager Elif Polat]] ((Elif Polat, Wedding Hall Manager ((female in Turkish)) “From the oldest to the youngest, there is an incredible unity here. We ask ourselves how we can reach all these people in the quake-hit areas. I can see immense sorrow in everyone’s eyes, but they are getting strength and tenacity from this sadness.” ((NARRATOR)) A truck filled to bursting point, is off to the disaster region bringing help and hope to the millions of people in need.
