((INTRO: The southern Ukrainian city of Kherson was retaken by Ukrainian forces from Russia in November, but the city remains a warzone, with families being displaced again and again by constant attacks. VOA’s Heather Murdock reports from Kherson, Ukraine.
((NARRATOR))
We are on the the outer edges of the city of Kherson, a city that was occupied by Russia for eight months before Ukrainian forces retook it in November. Besides ongoing attacks from Russian forces about three kilometers from the city, locals say the lives of the people here are in a state of general chaos.
Many people who fled the city when the war began or during the Russian occupation came back when Ukraine re-took the city. But not long after that, people began evacuating again because of the constant shelling.
For those remaining, resources are scarce. The people in this queue have been waiting for hours in the cold for cash assistance, only a little more than $30.
((Heather Murdock, VOA News))
And while that doesn’t buy much here in Ukraine, some families tell us they live on less than that for an entire month.
((NARRATOR:))
Some say they are desperate for the help because after nearly a year of war, they have already sold everything they have of value to pay for basic needs.
