Nazar Hrynyk runs these training sessions every week. ((Nazar Hrynyk, Combat Bees Founder)) ((IN UKR)) “I took courses in tactical medicine back in 2014 and know well how to provide first aid in extreme conditions. [[Shot]] … In such conditions." ((NARRATION)) He spent time on the front lines in today’s conflict and realized teaching his skills to others might be the best use of his talents. ((Nazar Hrynyk, Combat Bees Founder)) ((IN UKR)) “Since I have some medical experience, I applied to our territorial defense squad and was sent to work on an ambulance. We were evacuating wounded people from the Kyiv region because there was no medical infrastructure available there at that time.” ((NARRATION)) So Hrynyk founded a volunteer initiative to teach others to provide first aid. Hrynyk says his idol, American boxer Muhammad Ali, inspired him to call the group Combat Bees. ((Nazar Hrynyk, Combat Bees Founder)) ((IN UKR)) “I used to do boxing, and Muhammad Ali was one of my idols. There is a poster hanging in my room, ‘Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.’ And bees are something very Ukrainian, so that's how the name Combat Bees was born.” ((NARRATION)) The U.S. charity fund United Help Ukraine sends Hrynyk the first aid kits. ((Nazar Hrynyk, Combat Bees Founder)) ((IN UKR)) “We have been in contact since March; they supply us with tourniquets, hemostatic agents, and everything we need to complete a first aid kit according to NATO standards.” ((NARRATION)) Hrynyk says that during war, a wounded soldier may have to wait more than an hour to be taken to a doctor. So, it is important that soldiers learn how to apply first aid quickly — even on themselves. ((Nazar Hrynyk, Combat Bees Founder)) ((IN UKR)) “It is important to know how to apply a tourniquet on yourself, because a wounded fighter might often be alone on the battlefield. So, we teach soldiers how to do it with each hand; and it should be done in less than 25 seconds, because there are recorded cases when people lost consciousness in 35 to 40 seconds and could no longer help themselves.” ((NARRATION)) Combat Bees instructors also teach Ukrainian volunteers combat tactics. Today, a group is being trained that includes fighters who spent time on the front lines as well as inexperienced volunteers. ((Oleksandr, Volunteer Military Formation)) ((IN UKR)) “We take classes often; they are held regularly, and they help us improve our survival skills to protect our homeland from the invaders.” ((NARRATION)) Some volunteers who came here for training today plan to join the ranks of Ukraine’s Armed Forces soon.
