((INTRO)) [[ Lawmakers in Washington are continuing to react to the FBI search of former President Donald Trump’s residence in Florida. The search warrant indicates, among other things, an investigation into potential violations of the Espionage Act. Trump and his supporters quickly decried the search as politically motivated. Last Monday night in Palm Beach, Florida, the FBI searched Mar-A-Lago, the private residence and golf club of former President Donald Trump. In the presence of Trump’s attorney, federal agents opened a safe as part of an investigation into whether he took classified documents from the White House.

“Some of those documents were marked ‘top secret’ ((and)) ‘sensitive compartmented
information.’ That is among the highest designation in terms of the extremely grave damage to national security that could be done if it were disclosed. So the fact that they were in an unsecured place – that is, guarded with nothing more than a padlock or whatever security they had at a hotel – is deeply alarming.”

Trump and his supporters quickly cried foul, saying that the search was a politically motivated abuse of power, a claim the Biden White House rejects.

“I would remind our folks on the other side ((Republicans)) that the FBI director was appointed by the president’s ((Biden’s)) predecessor ((Trump)). I would remind the folks on the other side that when Merrick Garland was, indeed, confirmed it was a bipartisan fashion.”

The White House press secretary added the Biden administration has a hands off policy with the Justice Department.
Despite the former president’s legal team having received copies of the search warrant, they openly called for Attorney General Merrick Garland to make it public.

Garland said he personally authorized seeking a warrant and, pursuant to the law and upon Trump’s public request, he asked a judge to unseal it.

Trump, meanwhile, back in New York this week as part of a separate investigation into his real estate dealings, is maintaining strong support from his fellow Republicans on Capitol Hill.

“We don’t have to speculate. We have all the clearance. Congress has all the powers of oversight. All Attorney ((General)) Garland has to do is comply with the laws. Provide this information to us. Let us look. Show us the goods. Bipartisan basis people are calling for the Attorney General Garland ((to)) show us the goods. We need to determine, ‘Is this is a national security threat?’ And as we also determine that, was there abuse of discretion by Attorney General Garland.”
((VAR, DOCUMENTS, 08/12, AP))
((NARRATOR))
Republicans have been calling for more detailed information on what led a federal judge to issue a search warrant for Trump’s Florida home.
