Leonat Shehu and Artan Haraqija have more from Pristina, Kosovo.]] ((NARRATION)) Moscow claimed early this year that “mercenaries from Kosovo are involved in the war in Ukraine,” something the country's officials dismiss as part of Russia's disinformation campaign, pointing out that in Kosovo, participation in foreign wars is punishable by law. ((Kreshnik Ahmeti, Kosovo Deputy Foreign Minister)) ((In Albanian)) “The claim about ‘mercenaries’ is entirely untrue, and it is part of a special war [disinformation war] that Russia is waging against our country, among others.” ((NARRATION)) Kosovo officials say the disinformation campaign has made it apparent they need to do more to counter Russian propaganda. ((Lulzim Peci, Kosovar Institute for Policy Research and Development)) ((Albanian)) “It’s not enough to simply make statements saying that Putin is a criminal. I think we need to build a meaningful policy to counter Russia.” ((NARRATION)) Taking security measures is also necessary, experts says, because Kosovo shares a border with pro-Russian Serbia, and tensions between the two countries has been high in recent months. ((Mentor Vrajolli, Kosovo Center for Security Studies)) ((Albanian)) “We must remain vigilant, and international mechanisms like the NATO-led Kosovo Force must remain vigilant and increase border controls at the northern border with Serbia because the risk of trying to stage any internal conflict in Kosovo is still present." ((NARRATION)) Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani visited Washington in late July, and after a meeting with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, called for U.S. help in countering Russia’s influence. ((Vjosa Osmani, Kosovo President)) ((Albanian)) "We discussed in more detail how to be more vigilant from now on, much more coordinated with the U.S. and our other NATO allies in order to prevent these destabilizing plans." ((NARRATION)) Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 in a move backed by the West but opposed by Russia. Analysts say there is always the possibility the situation in Ukraine could spill over into the Balkans. ((For Leonat Shehu and Artan Haraqija in Pristina, Kosovo, Artan Haraqija, VOA News))
