Hundreds of displaced civilians from Syria’s northwestern camp of Shehba on Monday (8/1/2022) denounced continued signs of a new Turkish offensive in northern Syria.
The demonstrators denounced Turkish President Recep Erdogan, and mourned the death of Salwa Yusuk, the renowned deputy commander of US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces or SDF.
Yusuk was killed along with two other SDF fighters on July 22nd in a suspected Turkish drone attack near Qamishli city.

“What does Erdogan want from us? He made us displaced and now attacks us again, kills civilians, kills women, kills children and fires mortars at us. Where should we go?”
((NARRATOR))
The demonstration was led by the women's organization Kongra Star, a confederation of women's organizations in northern Syria.
The protesters are originally from the Kurdish city of Afrin in northwest Syria and fled their homes in January 2018 due to a Turkish incursion.

“Ever since the day we were compelled to leave Afrin and come to Shehba; Turkey does not leave us alone, even we have been forcibly displaced.”
((NARRATOR))
The protesters denounced what they called a global silence on Turkey’s actions in Syria. They said the UN should declare northern Syria a no-fly zone to ensure peace and stability for the diverse people of the region.
((Mohammed Rashid Ali, Demonstrator Male-Kurdish)
“Arab, Armenian, Christian, all formations living in Syria should be united and organized; they should stand against the Turkish invasion. Turkey will not achieve anything.”
((NARRATOR))
The U.S. has repeatedly urged the Erdogan government to avoid any new offensive in Northern Syria, saying it will destabilize the region and put U.S. troops at risk.
