The threats are raising fears of a new crisis in the Taiwan Strait, as VOA’s Bill Gallo reports from Seoul, South Korea.]] ((NARRATOR)) The plane carrying Speaker Pelosi’s delegation landed in Taiwan late Tuesday. A warm welcome spread across Taipei’s iconic skyscraper. But from Beijing, a very different message. China’s military released this threatening video showing recent drills, apparently simulating an invasion. ((Hua Chunying, China Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman (Mandarin, female))) "The US will certainly shoulder the responsibility and pay the price for undermining China's sovereignty and security interest." ((NARRATOR)) China this week stepped up military exercises near Taiwan. Analysts expect those drills to intensify in the coming days, raising fears of a miscalculation. ((Amanda Hsiao, Crisis Group Senior Analyst (in English))) ((Skype)) “Right now, the most important thing is that the two sides are signaling their intent very carefully and very clearly, and that is key to preventing this situation from escalating into a larger crisis.” ((NARRATOR)) Pelosi is making the highest-level U.S. visit to Taiwan in 25 years. In 1997, then House Speaker Newt Gingrich also visited Taiwan and Beijing. Gingrich recently told VOA he thinks Pelosi’s trip will only amount to an “irritation” to U.S.-China ties. ((English, male voice)) ((Newt Gingrich, Former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, (in English)))((Skype)) “I think this is at one level a lot of noise about nothing. I think, if she holds her ground. If the Biden administration doesn't act timidly and almost cowardly, I think everything will be fine. She'll go. It’ll be a nice event.” ((NARRATOR)) Taiwan residents, who are accustomed to threats from China, have mixed feelings. A large portion are relieved at the prospect of U.S. support. ((William Yang, Taiwan Foreign Correspondents' Club President)) ((Skype)) “But on the other hand, there is a group of Taiwanese people who are very suspicious about the intention and the purpose and the effect of the visit. A lot of them are questioning whether this is actually going to accelerate the pace of angering China, pushing China to take a more unwise and unreasonable action against Taiwan.” ((NARRATOR)) Many fear what is to come – not just this week – but in the months and years ahead, as China gets more powerful and more threatening.
