It was there that Ukrainian forces prevented the Russian army from advancing to the capital, Kyiv, 30 kilometers away. But 85% of the village was destroyed. Now the community wants to rebuild. From Moshchun, VOA Eastern Europe Chief Myroslava Gongadze reports.]] ((NARRATOR)) The village of Moshchun was as far as Russian ground forces came in their early attempt to reach Ukraine’s capital. Ukrainian troops stopped the Russians here, averting a bloody assault on Kyiv. For about a week, Moshchun fell under Russian occupation. Before leaving, Russian forces burned the village down. Evacuated just days before the Russians arrived, most of the residents survived. They returned to see their livelihoods in ashes. Now, local activists and businesspeople have created a charity project to rebuild the village. The family of Anna Kolosovska, like hundreds of others here in Moshchun, lost everything. Despite the horror they went through, they are determined to rebuild. Her 3-year-old-granddaughter Ira remembers the rocket fire. Playing on the ruins of her home, she repeats her mother's words. ((Ira, Moshchun Resident)) ((FEMALE CHILD IN UKRAINIAN, VOA)) “I am not afraid” ((NARRATOR)) Their neighbor, Liubov Topol, lost not only her home but also her only son, one of the leaders of the reservist Territorial Defense Forces in Moshchun. ((Liubov Topol, Moshchun Resident)) ((FEMALE IN UKRAINIAN, VO)) “I am not myself anymore. He is in front of my eyes.” ((NARRATOR)) Liubov is the first in her village to receive a temporary modular house under the Ukraine Dream charity initiative. It will be her home for the next couple of years. Vitaly Kashchenko, one of the founders of the initiative, says the first step is to provide all Moshchun citizens who lost their homes with temporary houses by mid-September. By the end of next year, he plans to create a new dream village. ((Vitaly Kashchenko, Ukraine Dream Charity Initiative - MALE IN UKRAINIAN – VOA)) “I would like to put up more than 300 homes because people lost everything. In the first stage, we need to provide people with a place for winter. Next, we have to give them a place for a dignified life and build a new village. Our goal is to rebuild Moshchun, and then Ukraine.” ((NARRATOR)) Rotary Club Kyiv International is behind the reconstruction effort and is encouraging the international community to join the rebuilding initiative. ((Serhiy Zavadsky, Rotary Club)) ((MALE IN English, VO)) “We collected from all over the world more than 15-million-dollar fund to help Ukraine. We hope that after it is rebuilt, it will be called a Rotary village.” ((NARRATOR)) The people of Moshchun are showing resilience. The Russian army destroyed their homes but could not destroy their courage, unity or love for their village. ((MYROSLAVA GONGADZE, VOA NEWS, MOSHCHUN, UKRAINE))
