[[U.S. officials say they are concerned about reports Turkey is planning a new offensive against U.S. backed, Syrian-based Kurdish fighters. Civilians in the Northern Syrian city of Qamishli say they are worried as well. For VOA, Zana Omar filed this report from Syria]]
((NARRATOR))
The Kurdish city of Qamishli has remained relatively safe during the 11 plus years of civil war in Syria.
But that could soon change if Turkey begins a military operation it has been threatening for weeks now.
((Mistafa Mihemed, Qamishli Resident))
“The situation is turning from bad to worse each day because of Turkey’s threats. What will happen to us? We can’t know.”
((NARRATOR))
The Turkish army has since the beginning of this month begun sending signals it will move into Northern Syria and has moved military equipment into the region.
Turkey has been threatening to expand an existing 30-kilometer-deep security zone on the Syrian side of the Turkish border since late May.
Some civilians say they need to be prepared to flee their homes soon.
((Dilbrin Aliz, Qamishli Resident))
“If the attack happens, Kurds will be the main targets and a new wave of civilian displacement will ensue. I really hope the threats are not put into action.”
((NARRATION))
Fear of another round of violence has crippled the city’s economy. Civilians have turned to storing food and essential needs.
((Ebdullrehman Eyub, Blacksmith))
“Because of Turkish threats, our businesses have slowed down by about 95%. The situation has really deteriorated. Before this, my friends used to come here to have a nice time—to eat and drink together here. But this has all stopped now.”
((NARRATOR))
US senior officials have publicly expressed their strong opposition to Turkey’s threats, warning a new assault could help the Islamic State regain strength and threaten civilians.
