Ferdinand Marcos Jr. became the 17th president of the Philippines Thursday, marking the family’s return power 36 years after a people’s uprising toppled his father’s dictatorial regime. Anthony Esguerra has more from Manila.

The only son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and beauty queen Imelda Marcos, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. — known by his nickname, "Bongbong" — has become the country’s first president to win a majority in decades, after securing more than 31 million votes.

In his first speech as president, Marcos promised to better control the pandemic and address the struggling economy and food security.

His supporters expect him to lead them to a more comfortable life as prices increase amid a coronavirus pandemic that wiped out the country’s economic gains.

Marcos ran on a campaign of national unity, inviting voters to forget the atrocities of his father’s dictatorial regime while propagating a collective nostalgia for the supposed “golden era” of the country.

Not far from the inauguration venue, hundreds of activists staged a protest to reject Marcos-Duterte alliance.

Sara Duterte, daughter of outgoing President Duterte, won the vice presidency and will serve alongside Marcos.

The Commission on Elections has denied there was cheating during the election despite reports of irregularities from international observers.
