[[U.S. lawmakers’ investigation into the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol resumed Tuesday with a surprise hearing highlighting testimony from a top Trump White House aide. As VOA’s congressional correspondent Katherine Gypson explains, the testimony sheds new light on the former president’s attempt to hold onto power.))

((Broll of Capitol Attack))
For several weeks now, U.S. lawmakers’ public hearings have alleged former President Donald Trump’s efforts to undermine American democracy resulted in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“A multipart pressure campaign driven by the former president aimed at overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election and blocking the transfer of power. We've shown that this effort was based on a lie, a lie that the election was stolen, tainted by widespread fraud, Donald Trump's big lie."

But testimony Tuesday revealed some of the most important details to date — as Cassidy Hutchinson — who worked just steps from the Oval Office — said Trump and his closest advisers, including her boss, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, knew of the potential for violence.

“I overheard the president say something to the effect of, you know, I don't ‘effing’ care that they have weapons. They're not here to hurt me. Take the ‘effing’ mags (magnetometers) away. Let my people in, and they can march to the Capitol from here.”

((AP Trump then over to screenshot of House Judiciary GOP Tweet calling it hearsay))
Trump has called the committee’s investigation unfair — and his Republican allies in the U.S. House criticized Hutchinson’s testimony — saying she was repeating secondhand stories. But Hutchinson — who risks criminal prosecution if she lies under oath — detailed Trump’s desire to march to the Capitol with his supporters, even though a top White House lawyer warned it was likely illegal.

((13;44;46;00 MRT JAN 6 hutchinson cippolone said pls make sure we dont go to capitol))
“Mr. Cipollone said something to the effect of, ‘please make sure we don't go up to the Capitol, Cassidy. Keep in touch with me. We're going to get charged with every crime imaginable if we make that movement happen.’”

((13;53;38;27 MRT JAN 6 hutchinson im the f ing president take me to capitol now))
“The president said something to the effect of, ‘I'm the ‘effing’ president. Take me up to the Capitol. Now.’ To which Bobby responded, ‘Sir, we have to go back to the West Wing.’ The president reached up towards the front of the vehicle to grab at the steering wheel.”
((Narrator))
((Broll of Greene, Brooks, Jordan from Gypson-Day 5 In-Progress then over to broll of Trump, Giuliani and Meadows))
Hutchinson has previously testified that multiple Republican members of Congress sought pardons from Trump for their roles in undermining the electoral process. On Tuesday, she also revealed Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and her boss, Meadows, also sought pardons.
((Rep. Liz Cheney, Republican))
((14;49;27;17 MRT JAN 6 hutchinson yes guiliani meadows sought pardon))
“Did White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows ever indicate that he was interested in receiving a presidential pardon related to January 6th?”
((Cassidy Hutchinson, Former White House Aide))
((Same clip as Cheney))
“Mr. Meadows did seek that pardon. Yes, ma'am.”
((Narrator))
((Capitol Dome Broll, Cutaways of Hearings – end on Capitol Riot broll))
The January 6th committee can recommend criminal charges to the U.S. Justice Department. Investigators are expected to resume public hearings in July.
