In March, Russian forces targeted more than 220 apartment buildings in Kyiv alone, destroying the lives of hundreds of civilians. Now, almost four months into the war, Kyiv authorities led by two boxing champion brothers are starting the reconstruction process of the civilian infrastructure to give people a chance to return to their homes before winter. VOA, Myroslava Gongadze and Anna Chernikova report from Kyiv.]] ((NARRATOR)) From the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion, the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, was one of the main targets. The city suffered missile attacks leaving hundreds in the city without homes. More than 600 buildings of the civilian infrastructure in Kyiv were damaged by Russian rockets. Now, more than 300 of them are in reconstruction. This apartment building in the western part of the city was hit by Russian rocket debris on March 15, killing four people and leaving almost 400 homeless. The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, says Russian forces are targeting the civilian infrastructure deliberately and he points to this building as proof. He visited the site to check on the reconstruction progress. ((Vitali Klitschko, Kyiv Mayor – MALE IN ENGLISH)) “We see the impact of this war. This lies from Russian propaganda. It’s “special military operation” against military forces in our hometown destroyed more than 220 apartment buildings where civilians lived. And this is the target. Four people died. Everything that is told in Russian propaganda it’s liar (lies).” ((NARRATOR)) People here say they want life to return to normal. ((Vitali Klitschko, Kyiv Mayor – MALE IN ENGLISH)) “And the main question for every Ukrainian is when this war will be stopped.” ((NARRATOR)) Vitali Klitschko is not alone in his efforts to bring normality to Kyiv and bring back peace to Ukraine. His brother, former professional boxer and the world heavyweight champion, Volodymyr Klitschko, is at his side. ((Volodymyr Klitschko, Former Champion Boxer – MALE IN ENGLISH)) “This is just the call of duty; I would say it this way. And I believe that all the Ukrainians, men and women, feel this call of duty.” ((NARRATOR)) Months into the war, Kyiv residents – like others in Ukraine - have only one wish: that this horror will stop, so they can start rebuilding their lives. The mayor’s brother makes an appeal for the world to help stop Russian aggression. ((Volodymyr Klitschko, Former Champion Boxer – MALE IN ENGLISH)) “If we won’t stop Russian forces here, it's just the beginning. They will knock on the door of the other nations, immediately, after capturing, conquering Ukraine. And the more (it) is going to be clear, and support as well, (that) not just humanitarian, financial, but also military support from the free world is extremely important, to show Russia it is not OK in 2022 - after the second world war - to break the international law and invade another country.” ((NARRATOR)) As Ukrainians call for an end to the war, two boxing champion brothers URGE the world to help fight against Russia and ensure peace in Europe.
