SOT (Spanish, Male) Enrique Piñeyro Families torn apart: women without husbands, children without fathers, the elderly. People who didn't want to leave where they were, and don't want to go where they're going, and don't even speak the language. As much of a relief as it is to not be threatened by Russian bombs, these people don’t want to leave. It took her four days to reach Poland. When she got there, she slept another two nights in the largest refugee center in Warsaw. 2.13 SOT (English, Female) Iana Kuko: I took a train to Helm, Poland. The trip took 35 hours. We had about 11 people in one compartment. Six women, one man, four children. The youngest child was only five months. during the night, there were some people sleeping on mattresses in the corridor. The wagon was overloaded with people. 2:14. Courtesy: AFP 2:36: Courtesty: TODO NOTICIAS 2.42 (Text) On Sunday, March 20, at 2am, pilot Enrique Piñeyro left Argentina on a Boeing 787 plane to pick up Ukrainian refugees in Warsaw, Poland. 2.50 (Text) Piñeyro founded the NGO Solidaire to help airlift refugees out of conflict zones and deliver aid to areas struck by all kinds of humanitarian tragedy. We try to give these people shelter for a few days and then try to give them a simple flat or maybe even a place that will provide a longer stay. ((5.53 SOT (English, Female) Iana Kuko)) “I left alone. I have a brother, he’s in the military so he can’t leave Ukraine. My mother and father decided to stay in Ukraine. They said: “we were born here and we will be here till the end.” I thought: if I stay longer, maybe my town will be occupied and I will not be able to leave, or work, or move, or have any communications with other people. So in order to have some kind of future, I decided to leave my town. ((6.41 SOT (Spanish, Male, Oscar Camps)) “Unfortunately, this crisis, this war, what it has done, has created a completely indiscriminate exodus to anywhere, anywhere on the border. They arrive however they can, and once they arrive, they’re at the mercy of public transportation. Their husbands, children or relatives are fighting. Obviously, they have nothing here, no relatives, no friends, no acquaintances to welcome them. And taking care of them is expensive. But they are refugees, they have requested protection. When we arrived, the situation was chaotic, so we immediately used our experience to try to find a decent place for all those people. Even with all the empathy you may feel towards their cause, themselves, their suffering, we can’t imagine what is happening, what is happening to them, what is going on in their heads and how they might feel. Many of the women you see here are mostly mothers or daughters of men who have had to stay to fight because they were forced to, so they may not see them again. How can you empathize? What can you tell them? The only thing you can do is help them make their stay as dignified as possible and as pleasant as possible within the limitations that we may have as a region and as a crisis. 10.08 SOT (Male, journalist off-screen)How many buses are there to take? And I think that in this situation people are being forced to do more than they’ve ever done before.. 16.53 (Text) Most of the people on the humanitarian flight had never flown before. They do not speak English or Italian. 16.58 (Text) All those who were on the plane to Rome had left some relative or friend behind in the Ukraine.
