((INTRO)) [[ A panel of U.S. House lawmakers resumes hearings Monday in connection with the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The panel held its first public hearings before a prime-time audience late Thursday as part of its investigation into the deadly rioting. As VOA’s Arash Arabasadi reports, the new hearings will likely focus on then-President Donald Trump’s role in the attack. ]]

So far, committee members lay the blame on former Republican President Donald Trump and his ongoing contention that the November 2020 election was stolen from him.

“We fight like hell, and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

“The evidence is very powerful that Donald Trump began telling this big lie even before the election that he was saying that any ballots counted after Election Day were going to be inherently suspect. That lie continued after the election and ultimately led to this mob assembling and attacking the Capitol.”

Recalling the events of the day, lawmakers focused on then-President Trump’s inaction as his supporters turned violent. Some chanted for then-Vice President Mike Pence to be hanged if Pence didn’t take extraordinary action to subvert the election results.

“President Trump was yelling, and quote ‘really angry’ at advisers who told him he needed to be doing something more ((to stop the violence)). And aware of the rioters’ chants to hang Mike Pence, the president responded with this sentiment, quote: ‘Maybe our supporters have the right idea. Mike Pence,’ quote, ‘deserves it.’”

Cheney went on to call her Republican colleagues’ unwillingness to stand up to the former president dishonorable. Others in her party want to look forward, not back at the past.

“I look at it this way: he ((Trump)) has already left. I think we should be looking more forward on this, but we’ll see what the evidence comes out with in regard to the ((former)) president. I’ll just say what he did was wrong. He should have spoken up. When it gets to the legal matters, I’m a little less confident. I’m not a lawyer.”

“What I saw was just a war scene. It was something like I had seen out of the movies. I couldn’t believe my eyes. There were officers on the ground. They were bleeding. They were throwing up. They were, you know, they had I mean, I saw friends with blood all over their faces. I was slipping in people’s blood.”

More than 800 people have so far been arrested in connection with the attack on the Capitol. Trump, for his part, has labeled members of the committee as “political hacks.”
The rioting occurred two weeks before Democrat Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States.
