Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner says the city cannot just cancel the convention contract "because we do not agree with their position on guns." But he did urge the National Rifle Association to postpone this event for a week or two following the Uvalde killings "to allow families to bury their children."
The event will continue on schedule, with a statement from the NRA saying: "Although an investigation is underway and facts are still emerging, we recognize this was the act of a lone, deranged criminal. As we gather in Houston, we will reflect on these events, pray for the victims, recognize our patriotic members, and pledge to redouble our commitment to making our schools secure."
Expected headline speakers at the event include the former president Donald Trump, Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
Local law enforcement say they have tactical operations in place to protect both anti-NRA demonstrators at designated protest zones and the nearly 80,000 NRA members who are expected to attend this event.
