[[When the war in Ukraine started, composer and cello player Ian Maksin immediately spoke up, condemning Russia’s aggression. Today, Malksin, who is of Russian descent, is touring the U.S., performing in a series of concerts to raise money to help Ukrainian children. Angelina Bagdsaryan has the story, narrated by Anna Rice.]]
((NARRATION))
When it became too difficult to choose words to describe the war in Ukraine, composer and cello player Ian Maksin put his feelings into music.
The famous composer, who is of Russian descent, embarked on a series of charity concerts through the U.S. to raise money for Ukrainian children.

“The world fell apart, my own world and the world around me. I literally had to put it back together piece by piece.”
((NARRATION))
Maksin says he couldn’t remain indifferent and act as though nothing had happened.

“When it comes to musicians, the majority are afraid they will lose their audience. // I made my choice on day one — and I lost all my Russian audience and the chance to perform in Russia. But I didn’t hesitate for a second.”
((NARRATION))
The funds raised from Maksin’s concerts will go directly to Ukrainian foundations.

“Our goal is to help children who suffered as a result of the war. We will raise funds for the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital and other hospitals as well.”

“Our job is to fundraise for medical equipment, for medical supplies and everything for the kids that have suffered from the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”
((NARRATION))
All the money raised after selling these paintings by Russian and Ukrainian artists will also be sent to Ukraine.

“I want to help children. I want them to grow up mentally healthy. The most important thing is for them to get through this period of pain and fear in the least traumatic way possible; I want them to grow up to be good people that will build our future.”
((NARRATION))
Maksin also thinks a lot about the future. And he believes the responsibility for what is happening today lies with everyone.

“I feel a certain responsibility, and I’m doing everything I can to atone, to minimize the harm that is being inflicted today by what is still my native country, my motherland. … I love my motherland, and I won’t allow anyone to accuse me of being a traitor or of not being a patriot.”
