“Media professionals are a direct target of the occupation forces. This is confirmed by the death of our colleagues, photographer Maksim Levin, Alexandra Kuvshinova from Fox News and others. This is confirmed by the testimony of those who were lucky enough to survive. A Swiss photographer’s car was marked as press, it had all the signs. That, however, didn’t stop Russian forces from shooting at the car, robbing it, taking the equipment and money.”

Journalist Oksana Baulina, was killed by a rocket strike near a Kyiv mall while on assignment. The same mall had been shelled by Russian forces the day before. Her colleague Anton Naumliuk recalls the incident.

“There were only rescue workers, journalists and some passers-by on site.”

The Committee to Protect Journalists says it is difficult to prove that journalists and media staff are being killed in retaliation for their reporting.

“We can only say whether the journalists were killed in a situation, when they were doing reporting or journalistic work. In that regard, we can say that there are at least seven journalists, where we can clearly say that their death is confirmed as they were doing reporting; they were working as journalists when it happened. But there are many more cases that need to be investigated.”
