Andre fled to Istanbul last month amid rumors of the introduction of nationwide conscription. ((Andre, Russian Exile ((male in English) (audio a bit low) “When I received the news that there might be conscription, I just had two hours to take my things and go. And I know people who were trying to leave Russia. Police started to talk with them (asking) why are you going? I chose Istanbul because it's not so far. I already knew something about this city. I have connections here and I can hear just Russian language just everywhere.” ((NARRATOR)) Istanbul has historical ties with Russia and a tradition of hosting Russians escaping their country's turmoil. Turkey is also one of few remaining countries Russian planes can fly to and offers visa-free travel, making it a popular destination for Russians, including those seeking a way to EU countries. You can easily come to Europe from Russia. You just first go to Istanbul and then to Europe. I know many friends of mine are in other countries. They just traveled and decided not to go back.” ((NARRATOR)) Many Russians are now buying properties in Turkey, which brings with it the opportunity to secure their savings and even Turkish citizenship. ((NARRATOR)) For Turkish real estate companies like Property Turkey, this is boom time. Even Russia's exclusion from the SWIFT money transfer system is proving no obstacle to Russians buying property in Turkey. [[RADIO VERSION: Alex Cihanoglu is a real estate agent in Istanbul.]] ((Alex Cihanoglu, Real Estate Agent - ((female in English) ON CAMERA -ORIGINAL)) “People who are looking for the citizenship program, they [are] most interested in investment properties in Istanbul. Nowadays, due to the SWIFT ban, people are stuck with transferring money. But there is a way; especially cryptocurrency is one of the best ways how they can move their funds to Turkey ((NARRATOR)) Andre says he plans to move on to Europe and establish a new life, but his thoughts are with the family and country he left behind. ((Andre, Russian Exile ((male in English) ON CAMERA -ORIGINAL)) “I am thinking about them every day and making calls and writing them almost every day. Actually, I want to take them from Russia or just have hope that Russia can change. I cannot imagine how long it can take because it already looks like the bad years of the USSR. For me, (it’s the) death of Russia.” ((NARRATOR)) For now, Andre spends time in Istanbul with the support of local Turks and a growing network of Russians for whom Turkey has become a refuge.
