((INTRO))) [[ Ukraine’s president says Russia’s ongoing and unprovoked war on his country is a “catastrophe” that endangers all of Europe. The Kremlin seems to have abandoned plans to topple the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, amid the war now in its second month. Western powers describe retreating Russian soldiers as war criminals for alleged atrocities ranging from rape to execution-style murders of civilians. ((Warning: some viewers may find images in this story disturbing.)) VOA’s Arash Arabasadi has more.]]

New video from the Russian Defense Ministry claims to show aviation crews destroying a column of Ukrainian armored combat vehicles and air defense units. VOA cannot independently verify the images. The Kremlin continues claiming it targets only military facilities and personnel, but verified images paint a different picture.

These images come in the aftermath of explosions late last week at a train station in the Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk. Dozens of civilians were killed in the attack. Russia denied responsibility, instead blaming Ukraine for attacking itself as an act of provocation.

The attack in Kramatorsk follows the recent discovery of civilian casualties on roadsides and shallow graves in Kyiv’s suburb of Bucha ((BOO-tcha)).

“There was a plan from the highest levels of the Russian government to target civilians who opposed the invasion, to cause violence against them, to organize efforts to brutalize them in order to try to terrorize the population and subjugate it.”

In a recent address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Russia’s aggression in his country – something he calls a genocide – threatens the future of Europe. European nations remain steadfast supporters of Ukraine but still purchase much of their energy from Russia.

“We need to do everything we can to increase our own domestic production to help make sure that we can supply them with as much as possible, but they need to understand that every single time, every single day that they are continuing to import Russian oil and gas, they’re funding [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s genocide in Ukraine.”
((NARRATOR))
Streams of Ukrainians lucky enough to escape war continue arriving at a camp across the Polish border.

But many remain trapped in places like the besieged port city of Mariupol with no hope in sight.
[RADIO TRACK: Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross delegation in Ukraine, Pascal Hundt, explains to SKY News.]

“We went there with buses. We moved. We try. We try again and again. But unfortunately, the situation around Mariupol was too dangerous. The security conditions were not good. The security guarantees we got were no good, either so at around 20 kilometers from Mariupol, we had to go back.”
((NARRATOR))
Elsewhere, in the town of Borodyanka, residents say their loved ones have been buried in rubble for weeks and their homes tattered after Russian occupiers finally fled. It’s a scene increasingly common of civilians as military targets in this war, despite Russian claims to the contrary.
