This year, the fighting has shifted in the country’s Afar region, displacing more Ethiopians as well as refugees from neighboring Eritrea seeking safety. For VOA, Vinicius Assis reports from Afdera in Ethiopia’s Afar region.]] ((NARRATOR)) Eritrean refugee Juma Ali Mohammed had been living peacefully in Ethiopia for 15 years. But in early February, fighting between Ethiopian federal forces, their allies and Tigrayan forces spread to Afar, sending Juma and her family fleeing for safety. In the confusion, she was separated from her husband and two of their children. She and three other children are now living at this former salt deposit. ((Juma Ali Mohammed, Eritrean Refugee)) ((In Afar, secs)) “During the escape my husband and our other kids took a different way. Now we are struggling here, and we have needs.” ((NARRATOR)) The U.N.’s Refugee Agency (UNHCR) says thousands of refugees like Juma were displaced by fighting in Afar. ((Astrid Castelene, Senior Emergency Coordinator, UNHCR)) ((In English, 20 seconds)) “The security in the area [is] very volatile specially in, at the border between Tigray and Afar region. And indeed, in February this has caused displacement of 20,600 refugees but also 300,000 people from Afar region. So, we remain very concerned.” ((NARRATOR)) 50-year-old Saleh Ali Mohammad and a few relatives fled the town of Abala with only the clothes they were wearing. ((Saleh Ali Mohammed, Displaced Person)) ((In Afar, secs)) “We left everything there. I’m here with my daughter and her children but my wife and the rest of my family are missing.” ((NARRATOR)) Others displaced from Abala found shelter at a former high school, with classrooms turned into bedrooms. Aicha Seid Mohammad’s husband was killed fighting against the rebels. ((Aicha Seid Mohammad, War Widow, ((In Afar __ seconds)) “He was a farmer and joined the militia to defend the town. After two days he was shot and died. We didn’t even have time to bury him.” ((NARRATOR)) A humanitarian truce announced several days ago has raised hopes that aid can get through to those who need it. Despite the truce, more fighting has been reported in the Afar region this week. Meanwhile, Afar’s displaced make the best of their shelter and hope it is only temporary.
