It has become a hub for the West’s humanitarian and military response to the war in Ukraine. ((VIDEO: APTN FOOTAGE OF BIDEN MEETING TROOPS)) Washington’s deployment of additional troops to NATO’s eastern flank brings the number of American service personnel stationed in Europe to over 100,000. The president shared pizza with members of the 82nd Airborne Division – among the 10,500 troops now stationed in Poland. ((Joe Biden, U.S. President)) “In the last 10 years fewer democracies have been formed than we've lost in the world. So this is, what you're engaged in is much more than just whether or not you can alleviate the pain and suffering of the people of Ukraine. We're in a new phase. Your generation, we're in an inflection point.” ((VIDEO: VOA AND APTN FOOTAGE OF BIDEN WITH DUDA)) ((NARRATOR)) Biden met his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda, at a humanitarian relief center. Washington has pledged an additional $1 billion in humanitarian aid. The U.S. president again accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of war crimes. ((Joe Biden, U.S. President)) “The single most important thing that we can do from the outset is keep the democracies united in our opposition and our effort to curtail the devastation that is occurring at the hands of a man who I, quite frankly, think is a war criminal.” ((VIDEO: APTN, REUTERS FOOTAGE OF BIDEN MEETING VON DER LEYEN)) ((NARRATOR)) Earlier Friday in Brussels, Biden met with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. ((VIDEO: APTN FOOTAGE OF PROTEST AGAINST RUSSIAN OIL AND GAS)) Currently Europe pays Russia around $600 million every day for energy imports, a glaring flaw in Western efforts to sanction Russia’s economy. ((VIDEO: REUTERS FOOTAGE OF LNG TERMINAL)) The United States plans to help end that dependency – with a new deal to boost Europe’s imports of liquefied natural gas to 50 billion cubic meters. ((Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission)) “This amount - 50 BCM per year - is replacing one-third already, of the Russian gas going to Europe today.” ((VIDEO: APTN FOOTAGE OF RUSSIAN INVASION)) Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has transformed the security landscape of Europe. At the heart of President Biden’s visit is a message of transatlantic unity. ((Alexander Vershbow, Former Deputy Secretary-General of NATO)) ((cf. Skype logo)) “Just the political message of unity among the Western supporters of Ukraine and solidarity with the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian government, sent a very important message to the Ukrainian people, who are the ones suffering on the ground. And it also sent a message to Moscow that its hopes of dividing the West are continuing to be in vain.” ((VIDEO: APTN FOOTAGE OF BIDEN ARRIVING IN WARSAW)) ((NARRATOR)) The White House says President Biden will give a landmark speech in Warsaw Saturday “to the people of the free world” – before returning to Washington. ((Henry Ridgwell, VOA News, standup, APTN FOOTAGE OF US TROOPS NON-STANDUP)) Poland is now at the center of the West’s response to the conflict: as the major recipient of Ukrainian refugees; as the base for increasing numbers of U.S. and NATO troops; and as a conduit for Western weapons and aid heading into Ukraine to help them fight Russia’s invasion.
