((INTRO))
[[While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was pleading for more military aid in a speech to the U.S. Congress Wednesday, a Ukrainian high school student in Washington was watching intently for signs of hope for her country. VOA’s Carolyn Presutti watched the speech with the 16-year-old Ukrainian teenager and her host mother.]]

“Is this a lot to ask for? To create a No-Fly Zone over Ukraine to save people?”
((NARRATOR))
While President Biden Wednesday announced an increase in American military aid to Ukraine, his administration says establishing a no-fly zone would put the U.S. military in direct conflict with Russia.

“It seems to me they are deeply afraid of provoking Russia as they have been for many years since Russia invaded Georgia. It doesn’t seem like there has been a great change in the mindset of them no matter how many crimes Russia has committed.”
((NARRATOR))
((video then to them tearing up watching it))
Knowing the war will continue despite the speech, both women tear up watching scenes provided by Zelenskyy, showing civilian carnage, in cities they recognize.

“The video has compiled some moments that are just truly disheartening for me, as a Ukrainian.”
((NARRATOR))

Christine Dulaney, who is of Ukrainian descent, has newly married cousins in Ukraine who recently drove family members to the Polish border and then returned to western Ukraine. On a video call, one of them explains they returned despite the danger to support their country.

“There is this Ukrainian spirit that all my life I had sort of heard about and you know, it's kind of amazing. I'm now seeing it kind of in action and being played out.”
((NARRATOR))
Played out in many Ukrainian cities. But the future is uncertain for Ukrainians and now even for Yaryna. Her high school year in the United States ends in June. But what then?
