In Donetsk, people are volunteering for a crash course in how to care for the wounded. Yaroslava Movchan has the story, narrated by Anna Rice.]]

These volunteers are learning how to save lives…
How to apply a tourniquet, how to use hemostatic medication to stop bleeding.
These are some of the skills volunteers in the city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region of Ukraine are learning at these pop-up first-aid classes. They’re taught by military instructors such as Yakiv Khyrliuk.
Instructors who have military experience hold the training. They received medical training in 2014 and have been perfecting it during the joint military drills of NATO and Ukraine. At the moment similar trainings are being held throughout Ukraine. In Pokrovsk, volunteers organized everything.

“You raise the arm this way and try and put it here. If there are no wounds, that’s good, but if there are, we need to act fast.”

“We all saw what is happening in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kyiv, Kherson, Mariupol … Mariupol is really close to us, too. And we see how civilians suffer. We have decided to turn to professional military doctors and get the right training, discuss everything to be ready for any developments.”

What is clear is that these skills are going to be needed as the Russian invasion drags on and becomes more deadly and civilian casualties rise.
More than 20 civilians have reportedly been killed in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, and 28 more wounded after a after a missile attack in the city on Monday.
